Rande Cook (Galapa) was born in 1977 in Alert Bay at the northern tip of Vancouver Island. His cultural heritage is in the 'Namgis, Ma'amtagila and Mamalilikala tribes. Rande's grandfather taught him the essential elements of art and impressed upon him how art reflects and preserves the culture of his people. He is recognized as one of the best totem pole carvers on the Island.
